"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have also coveted the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their music videos often depict them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to start a band."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The words track endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed confidence required a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

One man left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international audience.

However the band will consistently be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
