The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of the field

Following a drab midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
