The Generosity of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and started talking to other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I shared that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that after dark. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my host that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I worked there for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I didn't possess the courage or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
